Udawalawe National Park is one of the most significant and well-known national parks in Sri Lanka. Recognized for its rich biodiversity, the park is an important protected area that shelters a wide range of flora and fauna. It is especially renowned as a vital habitat for the Sri Lankan elephant, offering one of the best places in the world to observe these majestic animals in their natural environment. In addition, the park serves as a haven for water birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Geographically, Udawalawe National Park is located on the boundary of the Uva and Sabaragamuwa provinces, approximately 165 kilometres (103 miles) southeast of Colombo, the capital city. The park spans an area of around 30,821 hectares, much of which surrounds the Udawalawe Reservoir, a key water source that attracts large herds of elephants and other wildlife throughout the year.

The park was officially declared on 30th June 1972 under Government Gazette Notification No:14, during a ceremony presided over by the Ministry of Shipping and Tourism. The establishment of the park followed the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir, which displaced local villagers and transformed the surrounding ecosystem. The creation of this protected area ensured the conservation of wildlife in the region, particularly elephants, which had been losing their habitats due to human settlement and development.

Today, Udawalawe is not only a major tourist attraction but also plays a vital role in ecological balance and conservation in Sri Lanka. Visitors can expect to encounter herds of elephants, water buffalo, sambar deer, toque macaques, and a variety of bird species including eagles, herons, and storks. The park also provides important research and conservation opportunities, contributing to the protection of Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.
