Dambulla Cave Temple
Dambulla Rock Cave Temple. A historic and sacred site which was also a focal point for many kings since the 1st century B.C with King Valagamba (Vattagamini Abhaya).
This cave monastery with its five sanctuaries, has been a revered pilgrimage site for 22 centuries. These paintings and statues are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. Observe how these exquisite cave paintings are drawn along the walls along with over 150 statues of Lord Buddha. Painstakingly painted ceilings, sculptures of the Lord Buddha in various poses, statues of various deities and more within the five caverns that make up the complex.
While you explore this sanctuary make sure to take in the massive gold Buddha statue as well, the cave has been continuously occupied and maintained by monks for over 2,200 years. This continuous habitation makes it a unique living.
Ascending the gentle slope, you leave the modern world behind, stepping into a realm of spiritual tranquility. The real marvel lies within five sacred grottos, a sequence of caverns that unfold like the pages of a magnificent illuminated manuscript, each one revealing a deeper layer of divine narrative and royal patronage.
